Building a computer

by kal_lmn . Updated 18 years, 10 months ago

Ok, my problem is with building a computer (title). I don’t really have a problem as much as its a question, and i just want input. The thing is that I’m familiar with most hardware, but I havn’t a clue where to start. I know all the necessary components that a computer needs, but not which ones to buy. I dont really care what the computer can handle, as long as it turns out to be a hardcore gaming computer (kinda like the Dell XPS 720 Formula Red… minus the huge price tag). I also know that buying the components will be cheaper (I hope to god), but about how much? Basically, I just want to know:
1) what components (brand/maker/model) to buy
(MB, HD, case, video card, etc.)
2) Where to get them (your preffered source(s))
3) approximate cost (not exact,just a ballpark)

Sorry if I sound completely helpless, but last time i tried to build a computer myself, it ended in a disaster (i got wrong motherboard, case was too small, bus spees didnt match ide/HD speed, etc.). I ended up wasting about $8-900 on computer parts that basically didnt match or work with eachother, and I really want to know what im doing this time. I want to make a gaming computer that actually works.

I want many people’s ideas on this subject, so i can compare, and see how everyone takes on this project. And sorry if this is a long question, i wasnt sure whether to put it in questions, or discussion topics (feel free to move this thread if you want).

You guys have helped me in the past, so once again, thankyou in advance for all your help and support.
