Can anyone help me out with a problem that I ended creating myself after following instructions from the Microsoft Knowledge base page? I was having problems trying to access a ‘chat’ program, from an online school I’m attending,
called ‘Horizon Live’. (My O/S is Windows98 and the browser is Internet Explorer 6.0). Every time I tried to access it I got an error message: “This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If problem persists, contact vendor.” I also got thisone every time: “Explorer caused an Invalid Page fault in Module
I went to the Microsoft site to see what their suggestion was to fix this and this is what I ended up doing:
From the DOS prompt type:
c: cd\windows\system, then: ren comctl32.dll
Type: Ext , and then press enter.
When you receive the prompt, “please enter the path to the windows CAB files (a:)”, type: drive:\win98
When you receive the prompt: “please enter the name of the files you want to extract” , type: comctl32.dll, and then press ENTER.
At the prompt, “Please enter the path to extract to (“Enter” for current directory)”, type: C:\Windows\System, and press ENTER.
At the prompt: “Is this okay?” (y/n) type: Y, and then press ENTER. The file is then extracted.
Remove Windows 98 Startup disk and restart the computer.
Now I can’t reload Windows or reboot my computer. Any suggestions? I’d really appreciate ANYTHING at this point.
