Cant Access cdrom

I have a windows 2000 pro. One day the cdrom icon disapeared and then could not access cd rom. I dont know what caused it. It is in the device manager and says its inoperable.
I tried to delete it in device manager and then restarted find new hardware. It goes though the motions of finding it. But after reboot its icon is still no there and shows inoperable in device manager. I also have it dual booting with win me and it works ok under win me.. win 2k was working ok for months no problems..
