Can’t get login to work

Removed Novell Client from Win2000, left MS client in place. tried to reboot. Now I get the message “A network service failed to start. Please check your bootlog for details. Would you still like to logon to Windows 2000? When I select yes, I get another login screen. After I enter a password I get a message “Winlog has generated errors, the system will restart”, or words to that effect, and then the computer goes into a limbo state. Is there any way to recover from this so the applications anddata are still intact?
