Can’t install xp on 40Gig Hardrive

I am replacing an western digtial 40gig with a new 40 gig also western digital. It boots allows me to run the WD setup CD. Then when I try to load the XP it gets to checking system screen and hangs….forever!
I put it on the new cable installed as a single , even changed the bios cylinder, head settings per the directions. It still won’t work. Help!
