Can’t map to W2K via CNAME aliases

by jbalser . Updated 25 years, 4 months ago

I have built a new software distribution server on Win2K. I want to use DFS to share our installers out to clients, so I’ve created a CNAME alias called software.mydomain.com. Unfortunately, Win2K systems can’t seem to map to \\software.mydomain.com\install. I get a “Duplicate name exists” error. I can map directly to the server’s NetBIOS name (\\server) and NT systems don’t have any problems either way. I checked Technet and found article Q254210 which explains this as a NetBIOS over IP issue with NT systems trying to run “net view \\localhost”. This command also fails in Win2K, but the article says it shouldn’t. I thought W2K was supposed to be smarter about using DNS. Can anyone help me out?
