Cant run error check on HD’S with XP???

I just finished installing XP….and Norton Systemworks… but when i try to run an error chk on the HD (either windows untilies or Norton)i get a mssg saying Windows cant obtain exclusive access to the HD … i had to schedule this chk once the computer restarted but it took MUCH longer……

What is causing this problem?? Any ideas?
I never had this prob with 98,ME, or 2000….ESPECIALLY with a Clean install!!!
