Can’t save to server

by maceman . Updated 23 years, 2 months ago

Last Tuesday at 6:30AM, I relocated our company shared folder to another volume on the server. At 10:15AM people started having problems saving to the new shared from within the Microsoft Office applications. I started verifying the share and secuirty permission, everything looked correct. By the afternoon, they couldn’t save to any of the volumes on the server. I reboot was fine for about an hour then the same thing happened.

The interesting thing is you can save a file locally then copythe file to the server. Also, you can generate a PDF to server without a problem.

The server is a Xeon III 1.0G with 1G RAM, MegaRAID RAID-5 with 64M cache, 70G storage subsystem, and 2 NICs.

The workstations are both Win98 and XP.

At first I thought it was a network issues. I swapped switches and NICs but still a problem.

I swapped cache memory on the RAID controller, thinking it might be a cache issue.

I have installed a monitoring utility and every so often I get a time out error on a ping to the server with timeout value of 1000.

I have checked the services everything seems to be valid and nothing seems to be using high anmounts of CPU resources. I was thinking maybe a runaway service was tying up the server.

Also, I ran a sniffing program and the network seems normal.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill Mace
