CD Drive Not Reading Correctly

I have a pc that is not reading files correctly or when it does begin to read them comes up with missing or incorrect file names. Is this a sign of bad drive, corrupted drivers, or a virus. The machine was extremely dirty and the environment has a lot of smoke.
