CD drive opens and closes spontaneously

I have an old computer, a Dell Dimension T500, 512mb RAM, Win XP Pro, with a CD/DVD combo drive, another CD burner. The CD burner opens and closes spontaneously and irregularly. What might cause this and what can I do to correct it?
