cd/dvd drive doesn’t recognize cd/dvd

I purchased a HP about two months ago and I’m already having a problem with my cd/dvd drive. The computer recognizes the cd/dvd drive put nothing happens when I insert a cd or dvd. I already updated the drivers and re-installed the hardware and still nothing happend. It it a problem with the computer or the hardware?
