Cd/DVD drive not detected

My client’s pc has a brand new CD DVD drive fitted, it shows in the BIOS when booting the machine, it is also in the list of devices in hardware manager (win XP) however it has the usual excaimation mark next to it, it does not appear in the my computer window, it has no drive letter and it does not work….any ideas anyone?
