CD/DVD Rewriter

I recently purchased a laptop. In the begining the rewriter worked perfectly. Then it would take a while to read the cds but it would still play them. However, the laptop no longer reads the cds and will crash if i put one in. It will however read and play a dvd perfectly.
HELP PLEEZ!
