CD not recognised

I am fixing an old Pentium II for grandson. I have managed to get the PC to boot and using mscdex.exe the PC recognised D:. But when I put a Windows 95 CD into the drive to load the program, I am told that the drive is not ready.
Can you hopefullytell me what to try so that I can get this machine up and running?
