CD-R detected but fails to read CDs

Hi! I have a couple of CD-R drives and both of them have incidently the same kind of fault.The CD-R drives are detected while booting but as soon as the OS (both Win-98 as well as WinXP) is loaded ,though i can eject the drive from the OS i cant open a single CD. Please guide me.
