CD R/W plays Audio, Not visible in My Computer

I have a dell dimension 3000 with a Sony cd drive that will play Audio but I can not use it to burn cd’s. It is not visible in Devise Mgr. I upgraded the firmware and the drive showed up after the reboot but disappeared from view after running aan Audio Cd. I was trying to RIP songs from the Audio CD. Inserting a data CD reveals nothing. The drive letter is D: and seems to be reserved. Can’t get to it from CMD prompt either. Any one experienced this before?
