CD-ROM drive malfunction

by mastertone_tech . Updated 19 years ago

I think I should ask before ditching my CD-ROM drive. I have a laptop running Windows XP Professional. Here is what is happening:

It attempts to read the CD once I place in the drive (green flashing light). No problem opening the drive or closing it. However, nothing else happens after. When I open ‘My Computer’ and drill into the CD drive it shows empty, which means, the drive is not able to read the CD. I do not live in a dusty place, so it should not be the laser reader, and I do not travel with my machine to cause connectivity issues.

One thing it is worth mentioning is that the last time I have use it was when I copied a wave file from an audio CD into a Power-Point presentation. Coincidentally, after that I can no longer make any CD work into the drive.

Any suggestions? I thought about reinstalling my operating system and also Office over, as an upgrade. But, I thought I should ask before going that route as well.

Many thanks in advance for your responses.
