CD-Rom not recognized?

I have a Windows ’98 machine that has lost any knowledge of the cd-rom. It is an Acer machine that was won by our school district last year. The cd-rom has the name AOpen and the model #CD-95SE/AKH. It was made on 9/2001.
I have tried several drivers, but to no avail. Is there a generic driver that would do the trick?
I cannot explore for the drive.
