cd rom not working

I can see my cd drive in device manager. it has a yellow tag on it. I purchased a new one and the same thing happened with it. When I try to load the drivers from the internet, I get the following error message:
C:\Prora~1\\symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL
An installable virtual device driver failed dll initialization.
