CD Rom Problems

I just installed a cd rom in the computer. this computer never had a cd rom to begin with. I set the jumper to master, and ran the ribbon to the secoundary ide because the hard drive is on the primary ide. this didnt work. I also tried to daisy chain the hard drive, and the cd rom to the primary ide and this didnt work either. please help??
