CD-RW does not see disk

My Hp Pavilion has a cd rw. The disk is present in device manager but does not see cd’s when inserted. It will not auto run and when you go to my computer and click on it it opens to a cd rw burning window and does not show the contents of the cd. Ihave uninstalled and reinstalled, tried several different types of disks,did windows updates off MS site nothing. It is the hp pavilion xt973.
