cdrom/dvd issue

Running winxp have a internal ide cdrw installed and a internal ide dvd drive installed. for some reason the dvd drive only plays dvd-roms and the cdrw only plays cds. neither can read from a cdrom. when cdrom is inserted the dvd drive says disk is corrupted or a format windows cannot read and when its in the cdrw it opens up to a blank window. but in both cases in my computer it shows that a cdrom is in the drive, but it wont read it. tried reinstalling both still no good. all connections appear to be ok. even in safe mode neither read cdrom. also tried using just one drive, uninstalling the other but still no good. what do i do?
