Checksum error

Hi,
I have a win98 computer..When ever I start or reboot the computer I get a warning as follows: error 0251-system cmos checksum bad press f1 to use default configuration or f2 to go into setup.I’ll hit f1 and all will be fine.Can anybody explainwhat this message means and how to correct it.Thanks in advance
