Chkdsk

Hi
Daft question coming up and I should know the answer.
After running chkdsk on my systems C: drive it reported that the file system was damaged and I should rerun ckdsk /F option.
I tried that but chkdsk said that it couldn’t lock the disk.
I’m runningXP SP2.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
