CHKDSK will not complete.

One of my users has an IBM ThinkPad A31p running Windows XP Pro. The computer has frozen (no BSOD) twice in the last week (while working in different programs). Nothing shows up in the Event Viewer at the time of the freeze. When I try to run CHKDSK, the computer stops during stage 5 (checking free space) at 30% everytime. Is the HDD shot?
