Compaq 5000 won’t recognize new Memory

I recently installed 256 MB of PC 100 SDRAM into a Compaq 5000-A PC. (Initially it had 62 MB memory installed.) the computer only recognizes the 62 MB. I have loaded the drivers one by one, etc, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?
