Computer freezes during startup

I’ve got a Compaq that is a little older and a little slower. It freezes up during the starup of the system (Where the screen says “COMPAQ” right after the computer is turned on). Is this an easily fixable problem?
What are some things that I can try to do to get it running right. I don’t know much about these things so I apologize if I sound like an idiot.
