computer wont boot up

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop. Once the computer is booted up and says on the windows xp forever. I spoke with Dell tech support and they state that the Hard drive needs to be replaced. Do I need to replace the hard drive or is something else wrong here. Also what would be the best hard drive to replace it with. Im looking to go with a 80gb.
