connecting my laptop to my desktop

ok so the past couple days i have been trying to fix my startup issue on my Windows 98 desktop.

it hasnt worked..

what i want to do is try to connect my laptop to my desktop to maybe retreive some information or files…

is there a cheap way of doing this
is it possible?
can it be done with usb cord??

p.s. my laptop is windows 98 aswell.
