Connection gremlin in IE6 LAN

occasionally in IE6>tools>internet options>connections>LAN settings, “use a proxy server….” becomes checked. When this happens, I can’t access the net and I have to undo this setting. W98SE, IE6, Cable. How do I exorcise the gremlin?
