Copying user profiles

I tried copying a user profile, logged in as a member of the local administrators group and am running into a problem giving a domain user-id access to the new profile. After I point the original profile name to the new profile name I select changeunder Permitted to Use but the screen does not let me change to a domain – only the local users are listed. Any suggestions as to what to try next would be great.
