Copyright, Patents and Trademarks

I want contract someone to create an application for me. Can I copyright or patnet the application? As it will probably be written in VB or C++, and it is basically a glorified macro, I guess I can’t patent it. Can I, should I, copyright it? I assume the trademark issue just covers the applications name and logo. Thanks, Tony
