correcting error in chkdsk xp

Have a western digital hard drive that is giving me problems. The drive is in it’s second year – i think

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3000JB 300GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive

There are two older drives

It is my husbands machine and I am not sure exactly how it came to the current state

The bios reads the drive

when booting it states “one of the disks needs to be checked for consistency”

chkdsk verifies stage 1

in stage 2 the message reads “correcting error in index $ 0 for file 25”

Windows opens but the tray hangs and the hour glass continually runs

Tried to repair the os installation from the installation disk it hangs at 25 %

in checking drive c

help me
