Corrupted Word File

I created a lengthy Word document, closed it, everything looked fine. Now I cannot open it in either Word or Wordpad and other computers have the same problem. Word actually crashes when asked to open the file. There is a back-up copy but it has thesame problem.
Is there a utility that might save me from re-creating the file?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
