Covert External HD to NTFS?

I have 2 Western Digital external hard drives (FAT32) connected to my laptop via USB. Any reason(s) why I cannot or should not convert them to NTFS?

System = Toshiba; Intel 2.0 Ghz; 1 Mb RAM; XP Pro
