Create Java Executable

Could someone tell me how to create an executable java file. I need to be able to create one for my college diploma major project. I have downloaded J2SDK_1.4_beta compiler and jre. I can compile the file, I just need to create an executable for win2000 and mac9.5. I need an icon that can be clicked on the desktop to start the java program.
