Data Recovery

Someone called me yesterday saying that he accidentally formatted his HD. He is an older gentleman, and was trying to format floppy disks to back up some valuable data. He got a little confused and consulted his users manual and realized a little too late that the directions that he was reading were for HD formatting. It there any software that is extremely affordable that might recover his valuable data?
