Data Recovery

I have a floppy disk which has somehow corrupted. The files on there are all now named with what looks like ‘webding’ style characters. I can’t access any of the files (mainly Word Docs).

1. Why does this happen?
2. Can anyone recommend any FREEWARE utility that will recover the files?
