?Debug startup errors?

Is there a tool I can use to detect what is causing an error i get after logging into a single W2K Pro machine. I get “error:could not wait on selected resource”.
There is no foreground application running, and I cannot yet determine what is causing it. Other than eliminating innocent parties, is there a way to capture the culprit in a log et al?
