Default shares disappear when converting

During core tech class, I’ve noticed that when we convert from FAT –> NTFS, some computers loose their default shares (C$, D$, Admin$ & NetLogon). This happens sporatically and inconsistently.

I don’t notice it until we do replication, then it causes problems and confusion for the students.

Can anyone suggest a reason
