Defrag restarts after 2% completed

I have a Windows ME pc.

Whenever I run defrag on it, the defrag process restarts. After reaching 2 % completed, defrag begins again at 0% … over and over.

I have ran the pc through Windows Update to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. As well as elimintating the Anti-virus.

Any suggestions?
