DeviceDesc Identifying

by seademyer . Updated 18 years, 11 months ago

While cleaning, repairing, and updating donated or low cost computers for handicapped people, I frequently encounter yellow question marked icons in windows device manager. I recently saw a tip on identifying the source of those icons, however, I have lost the source of the tip and remember only parts of it.

Remembered: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\currentControlSet\Enum\PCI\
Remembered: Then a series of VEN_…. entries. Next process was to open each VEN_’s subfolder and note the entry for DeviceDesc. Look for one that reads “Unknown”
Partial memory: the first 4 numbers after the underscore I think stood for the mfgs ID and the first 4 numbers after DEV were required in order to learn the model/manufacture of the “Unknown” device.
Forgotten: The URL address used to solve the maker etc. Could someone direct me to that tip or supply the correct/missing information. Thank you very much

We are upgrading/updating these computers to windows 2000
