DHCP Addressing

I am working in an environment where thay are using hard coded IP addressing on all printers, workstations and network devices. The reason is not clear other then DHCP was causing problems. I was under the impression that DHCP addressing is quicker. Can I get he advantages, disadvanteges and opinions?
