Dictionary Problems in Word and Exchange

I am unable to access the dictionary option in MS exchange. Message is “No custom dictionary was opened”. In MS word the dictionary is there but you can’t “add” custom words. The PC is in a remote location and the PC user isn’t much help. I hope to find some info without having to travel down personally to fix the PC.
