Ding Sounds, Ding doesn’t sound

When I try to play ding.wav from the Sounds-applet in Win95 it can’t be heard.
When I double-click the file in Explorer it is opened and can be heard.
How do I make it heard when connected in the applet to a Windows-action?
Formerly there was no problem, somehow it stopped working. Also no problem with playing CD’s (except when playing House, neighbours start complaining )
