direct cable connect by serial/parallel

i’m trying to connect a pc to a laptop, the laptop is running win me and the pc is win 2000.
when i go to the network connection wizard “connect directly to another computer” is greyed out. I tried “allow incoming connections” but it only gave me an ltp1 port. can anyone help?
if there is a better way to complete this task i’ll check that out too but would perfer the above question answered first.
