direct cable connection win98 & XP

I’m trying to connect via serial ports; laptop doesn’t have a parallel port. I’ve set up the connection on both computers. The 98 desktop searches and can’t find the XP laptop and visa versa. What am I missing? It seems like a true “blind” date.
