DirectX 8.0 and ATI Rage Pro Video card

Just recently I bought the game Myst III: Exile. During the installation, I installed DirectX 8.0 on my computer. When the computer restarted, the monitor stopped working, and when I turned the monitor off and back on the screen was very distorted. To fix this, I had to go into safe mode and reset my video settings. I am currently stuck with using 256 colors, instead of 16 bit colors. My question is: Does anyone know how to get my colors back to 16 bit, or how to uninstall DirectX 8.0 and go back to DirectX 7.0? Thanks in advance.
