directX & Quicktime

Installed new drivers for my soundcard—drivers failed
uninstalled drivers. when I run directdiags it states that direct sound, music & system properties had problems last time it was run. If I opt to include them in this session system hangs. If I opt not to system runs until I try to close dxdiags,then hangs. Quicktime simply hangs machine. I have reinstalled directx 8.0 & 8.1 & vise-versa–no change. I uninstalled quicktime & reinstalled —no change. Is there any way to solve this other than reinstalling windows or the dreaded format c: ?????
