disappeared DVD/CD RW drive

Hi,
I am using a new Gateway laptop running Vista Home Premium. When I got the computer my kids watched a DVD right away and the drive worked fine. A few days after having the computer I loaded another DVD and the computer said there was no disc in the drive. I checked and windows could not find the drive, it was not listed in device manager or my computer. I ended up doing a system restore to the system checkpoint from the first time I started the computer, and the drive was back. This happened one more time, and system restore brought the drive back again. After that, system restore did not bring the drive back. I did some googling and found a registry edit that worked for a lot of people deleting upper and lower filters. Didn’t help. I also deleted a windows update that apparently had helped others, but it didn’t help me. Finally I went into my BIOS and saw that it is set to auto detect the drive, but shows drives listed as “none”. I read somewhere that BIOS doesn’t detect an optical drive, so I don’t know where else to look. I also tried to re-install vista, but cannot boot from the drive either, although my boot menu has IDE as it’s first choice, SATA as second. I would suspect a loose connection or bad drive, except that system restore did fix it in the beginning. I think that’s all the info. Any suggestions?

Thanks to all!!!

Leslie
